Hmm, it's not a huge deal either way, but so far it really feels like one extra unnecessary click. I think I'm leaning towards the old layout. But... not really that important :)

I dislike the new layout. You can't click on the newest post from the forum index and come to the correct post (assuming only one post is updated and it is in a subforum as is very common).
